Initial Film review

Plot review

Remember the Titans is a film about the racial differences in an American town, Alexandra, Virginia. When a Black coach comes to an all white school and collects a mixture of black football players and white football players, different races mix and and some of the racist nature lifts from the town.

Character

I thought that the character who stood out most for me in the film was the white team captain’s girlfriend, Emma Hoyt. Even though Emma was not that much of a main character, the reason that Emma stood out to me was because of her extremely racist manner. Emma broke up with her boyfriend, Gerry Berter (Who was the team captain), when he started to closely associate himself with his black teams, which showed her unwillingness to get to know people of different colour.

Analysing of set

I thought that the setting of the movie was very clever. The scenes in which the movie is shot have been carefully chosen to make the messages of the movie clear. For example, when Coach Boone moves into a new all white neighborhood it is clear that the houses in this street are much nicer than the coloured peoples houses. The comparisons between the two vicinities shows how unequal life was back then. Once the Boones have moved into their new house the surrounding neighbours immediately judged the family based on the colour of their skin, which shows that they live in a world where African – American people are considered not good enough for “Pure” white society, (another example of this is when one of the white football players takes a black member of the team for dinner. They are refused inside and instead the restaurant owners instead say “Go round the back instead and have some scraps”)

Directors Intentions

I think that the director (Baoz Yankin) intended on using this movie to make a statement on how serious racism was (and still is) in the United States and that every single one of us can make a difference. I think that he succeeded in sending this message to the audience by the way he made it clear all the way through the film, that even though it might, and probably will take a long time, you can make a difference. He showed this by an example of the football team and how, over time they eventually grew to be the best of friends despite the colour of their skin.

 Cinematography Makeup

Even though I doubt that the makeup in the movie was meant to have a big impact, it personally did mean something to me. Beads of sweat were often used when the Titans were first formed together and were being trained. Even though i’m sure that sweat is just sweat in the movie, it showed me the strength that it took to train these boys, despite colour, to not only work as a team but to act like a team, meaning how friendships were formed between the boys, even Gerry Berter calling Julius Cambell his “brother” even they were quite obviously not related. The metaphor shows, just through sweat! , good, strong friendships need to be worked on and are something that you have training with.
